NASA Orion Forward Bay Cover Thruster

Systima, under contract to Lockheed Martin, designed, tested and built the Forward Bay Cover Thrusters used on the recent Forward Bay Cover deployment tests conducted by Lockheed Martin. These tests include a Forward Bay Cover ground jettison test conducted December 19th, 2013 and a drop test of the system conducted January 17th, 2014. The Thrusters retain the Forward Bay Cover throughout the launch, orbital flight and re-entry. The Thrusters function after re-entry, high above the ground, jettisoning the Forward Bay Cover and allowing the parachutes to deploy. Systima’s Forward Bay Cover Thrusters will also be used on Orion’s upcoming space mission, EFT-1, scheduled for September 2014.
